Get to know Lakewood

Lakewood is a host community to JBLM and Camp Murray, with residential areas, commercial corridors, and lakes that create different settings for a home search. Start by mapping your workplace and the services you use, then compare properties within that practical search area.

For a base-related move, use your actual gate and workplace when testing travel. For other buyers, compare the route to work with the places you would visit after hours, including parks and lake recreation. Visit the block around each shortlisted home. Being in the same city does not mean two properties will have the same access, surroundings, or ownership costs.Explore official community information →

Homes and ownership considerations

Lakewood’s detached homes, condos, and townhomes offer different combinations of space and maintenance responsibilities. Compare room layout, parking, storage, yard upkeep, and the condition of major systems. An established detached home and a condo with similar asking prices can have quite different monthly and long-term costs.

For a lakefront property, verify shoreline records, access rights, improvements, maintenance, and insurance with the appropriate professionals. For a condo, review the resale documents, association budget, reserves, dues, and assessments. Ask what is included in shared costs and what remains your responsibility. These checks make the price comparison more useful before you decide which type of home fits.

Parks and everyday life

Fort Steilacoom Park and American Lake Park are useful stops for exploring two parts of Lakewood’s outdoor life. Choose a visit that matches how you spend your time, and check current city information for park facilities and access.

Then test how those destinations connect to a home you are considering. Map the drive, walk, or transit trip, along with groceries and regular appointments. For lakefront listings, separate the public recreation you can enjoy from any private access claimed for the property. Understanding both helps you compare the area’s amenities with the rights and responsibilities that come with a particular home.Explore parks and local resources →

Plan your commute

Lakewood’s location near JBLM and regional roads is a starting point, not a complete commute plan. Test the trip from the home at your usual travel time. For an installation workplace, include the actual gate, entry process, and the route from the gate to your destination.

For other work locations, compare local road access, the regional connection, and parking at the end of the trip. Check current Sound Transit or Pierce Transit service if rail or bus travel may fit your schedule. Include errands and appointments too, especially if more than one person in the household will travel in different directions.

Schools and education

Confirm school assignment directly with the district for the exact address and school year. Use Washington OSPI’s district directory to begin your research.
