How do you commute from Bonney Lake to Seattle, Tacoma, or JBLM?
Almost every Bonney Lake commute starts on SR 410 down the hill toward Sumner. From there, Seattle, Kent, and Renton commuters usually take SR 167 north; Tacoma and JBLM commuters usually take SR 512 west to I-5; and Auburn or Federal Way commuters often use Lake Tapps Parkway or SR 167 to SR 18. For transit, Sound Transit’s Route 596 runs from the Bonney Lake Park-and-Ride to Sumner Station, timed to meet weekday Sounder trains to Seattle and Tacoma. Peak-hour drive times vary a lot, so test your actual route at rush hour before you buy.
Bonney Lake gives you more space, newer neighborhoods, and Lake Tapps nearby. The tradeoff is the drive. Bonney Lake sits on a plateau above the valley, and nearly every route out goes through a few key roads.

The SR 410 factor
SR 410 is the main way on and off the plateau, and morning traffic stacks up heading down the hill toward Sumner. Homes on the west side of Bonney Lake, closer to the SR 410 hill, often shave minutes off the first leg. Homes near Lake Tapps Parkway can have a faster route north toward Auburn.
Watch the SR 167 Completion Project
WSDOT’s SR 167 Completion Project is building a new connection between Puyallup and I-5 and the Port of Tacoma. As segments open, Tacoma-bound trips from the Bonney Lake area may change. Check WSDOT for current timelines.

How to choose a home with your commute in mind
- Drive it at rush hour — both directions, on a weekday.
- Note which side of town you’re on. West side vs. Lake Tapps vs. Tehaleh changes your first 10 minutes.
- Check hybrid schedules. A two- or three-day commute changes how much the drive matters.
- Compare nearby options. If the drive is a dealbreaker, see how Puyallup, Bonney Lake, and Sumner compare, or what to know about Tehaleh vs. established Bonney Lake neighborhoods.
