Gig Harbor vs. Key Peninsula: How the Two Areas Compare

By Josh Barnard · The Barnard Group

Couple on a deck overlooking a quiet bay near Gig Harbor at sunset

Gig Harbor and the Key Peninsula sit side by side on the west side of the Tacoma Narrows, but they offer different settings. Gig Harbor is a small city plus surrounding unincorporated neighborhoods, with a working waterfront, shopping, and the shortest drive to the Narrows Bridge. The Key Peninsula, reached along SR 302 and the Key Peninsula Highway, is unincorporated and rural, with more acreage, more waterfront on quiet bays, and longer drives. Both are served by the Peninsula School District. Commute, lot size, utilities, and how much quiet you want usually decide it.

Here’s an objective side-by-side for buyers comparing the two.

Key Peninsula: space and quiet

The Key Peninsula appeals to buyers who want room for animals, gardens, or a shop, or a quieter waterfront setting. The trade-offs are drive time and rural infrastructure. Plan for well and septic inspections, road access, and internet options. See buying acreage in Pierce County and well inspections.
