The city itself is relatively small—12,029 residents in the 2020 Census—but many homes with a Gig Harbor mailing address are in unincorporated Pierce County outside city limits. That distinction matters for utilities, zoning, and permitting.
Community character
Gig Harbor developed as a fishing village. Beginning in the late 1800s, immigrants from Croatia, Sweden, and Norway settled around the harbor, and that maritime heritage still shapes the downtown waterfront. The town was incorporated in 1946. The completion of the replacement Narrows Bridge in 1950 made it far easier to live in Gig Harbor and work in Tacoma, and the community has grown steadily since.
Today the historic waterfront includes shops, restaurants, marinas, and public parks and docks along the harbor, while the Harbor History Museum tells the story of the area. Boating, paddling, and time on the water are part of everyday life for many residents, and the peninsula has several parks and trails, including nearby state parks.

Getting around
The Tacoma Narrows Bridge is the main link between Gig Harbor and Tacoma. Only the eastbound direction (Gig Harbor to Tacoma) is tolled. Rates effective since October 1, 2022 are $4.50 with a Good To Go! pass, $4.75 with Pay By Plate, $5.50 at the toll booth, and $6.50 Pay By Mail for two-axle vehicles, according to the Washington State Transportation Commission. The Commission reviews rates annually, so check for updates.
From the bridge, drivers connect to I-5 for Tacoma, Joint Base Lewis-McChord, and points north and south.
